  • How are you working to ensure everyone’s safety while on campus?

    The Scenario Task Force is making the necessary changes to physical spaces on campus to promote a healthy environment. As long as infection rates remain at low levels and state and local guidelines permit, classes will be conducted in a manner that prioritizes in-person instruction and also allows for full remote participation for those who cannot be present. Based on the city, county, and state requirements, we have developed protocols and procedures to promote health and safety, including:
    • Hand washing/sanitizing stations strategically placed throughout campus
    • Clear visual guidelines to optimize traffic flow around campus, prevent congestion, and provide clarity in physical distancing
    • Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures, based on the best available scientific guidance
    • Special protocols for bathroom usage
    • Limiting adults on campus to faculty and staff, at least to start, based on city, county, and state regulations
    • Protocols for daily temperature checks before entering campus
  • What will influence Mayfield’s return and continuity planning?

    Mayfield will follow the guidance and restrictions put in place by local, state, and federal public health authorities.
  • Will the tuition be different for this school year?

    Tuition is the same as was announced in the early spring:

  • What if the public health situation significantly improves or worsens?

    Mayfield remains committed to carefully monitoring and responding to new information about COVID-19 and its impacts. In developing the various continuity scenarios, it is understood that our plans must be flexible and include contingencies for changing conditions over time. We are prepared to pivot through our outlined plans in order to take swift actions to keep our community safe.
  • What is the purpose of an at-home, 14-day quarantine before on-campus learning resumes?

    We are requiring all students to take utmost precautions to ensure their health leading up to arrival on campus this fall. This includes a self-quarantine for 14 days in your local residence during which all students should stay at home except for essential outings, limit contact with others outside of their households, avoid public transportation, practice physical distancing, and keep a log of temperature and relevant symptoms. We recognize this causes an inconvenience for some of our families. However, the health of our community during an ongoing pandemic requires extra precautions. This is an opportunity to practice the daily procedures such as health checks and sustained wearing of face coverings. Like many of our plans, we will review and update this policy as the school year approaches.
  • How will physical distancing be practiced?

    Classrooms are being reorganized to support physical distancing of 6 feet whenever possible. We are spacing out and removing furniture, assigning seats, adjusting the number of students to the size of the classroom. Other campus adjustments include:
    • Desks six feet apart with designations of individual space
    • Innovative use of entire campus to create classroom spaces for each cohort
    • Efficient movement of students directionally on campus
    • Hallway traffic reduction measures
    • Designated outdoor areas for flexible classrooms and physical activity
    • Occupancy limits on bathrooms
  • What if my child or someone in my family becomes ill?

    The Task Force will have a daily screening procedure that all faculty, staff, and students must complete before they enter campus. When your online screening app says your child(ren) is symptom-free, you proceed to campus at your appointed time for a thermal scan screening. If your child(ren) is flagged during the thermal scan screening, a traditional temperature screening will be done. If your child(ren) has a confirmed temperature of 100 degrees or higher, and/or other symptoms, you will be called for an immediate pick-up. Students who stay home or are sent home with a fever will be required to be fever-free (without medication) for 72 hours before returning to campus. If a student or family member must self-quarantine due to travel or a COVID-19 diagnosis, the student and their siblings are asked to follow CDC criteria for home isolation which is currently 14 days.
  • You mentioned a 3-Day rotation, will my child be in class five (5) days a week?

    Yes, students will be in classes five days a week whether in remote learning or on campus in person learning.
  • What is the average size of a cohort for students in K-4? 5-8?

    Cohorts (homerooms) are an average of 12 students in lower school.
    In middle school, the average size of a cohort (advisory) is 13.5.
  • How do you determine cohort size?

    The size of the cohort (advisory/homeroom) is based on the square footage of usable space in a classroom that enables 6ft physical distancing for students and teacher.
  • Will campus events occur this school year?

    Guidelines provided by local, state, federal health authorities will be followed for all gatherings. As of now, and to limit exposure to our students, all large campus gatherings have been postponed, and/or will be reimagined for an online space. We will update the community if our plans change.
  • Can my student leave Mayfield during the day?

    In an effort to maintain a healthy campus, we are trying to limit campus departures. We encourage medical and dental appointments to be scheduled after school if possible. If an appointment occurs during schooltime, we will have protocols for student departure and return. At the present time we are not anticipating students will be allowed to leave campus for high school visits in the fall. We will re-evaluate this restriction as the year progresses.
  • What should my child wear?

    • School uniform: Regular school uniform is required whenever students are on campus except on days in which the children take PE.
    • Face covering: Students must wear cloth face coverings all day while on campus. Please have 2-3 masks in their belongings. Masks may be of any color or design, but should be free of inappropriate words or images.
    • Shoes: follow the school uniform guidelines
    • P.E. Days: Students should wear PE clothes all day during days in which they have PE (noted on student schedules) for freedom of movement and the inability to change in the locker rooms
    • Concert Dress : We will not be utilizing Concert Dress this year due to the restrictions on space and movement for students.
  • Will there be used uniform sales this year?

    No. Due to the health and safety guidelines we will be unable to take used uniforms and sell them this year.
  • Will my child be allowed to arrive early or stay after school?

    At this time, there can be no arrivals before 8:00 am, and for extended care after school, there is a registration process. We cannot support drop-ins.
  • Can my child arrive or depart with another family?

    Only if the family is in your child’s cohort.
  • What does snack and lunch time look like?

    Each cohort will have two recesses per day that are scheduled on a rotation in order to be sure that the students do not mix with other cohorts. The students will be able to get outside and be on the field in a large enough space for freedom of movement within their cohort.

    Lunch is in the classroom with the cohort leader (Homeroom teacher/advisor). Students will wash/sanitize hands before and after eating as well as clean their desks before and after eating. Masks are off during this time and with clean hands after lunch a new mask is to be worn again. All classrooms have been outfitted with cleaning supplies.
  • Will there be an after school program this year?

    Due to the health and safety guidelines, we cannot offer an after school program at this time. There may be co-curricular activities that are virtual in nature, but we will not have traditional after school programs or activities. More information about future activities will be provided in the near future.

  • Does my child need to wear a uniform during Remote Learning?

    No. Please follow the guidelines for Free Dress in the Parent/Student Handbook.
  • How will new students get help being integrated into the community?

    We have several events in which we will orient and welcome new students into our community (virtually at first). Invitations for these events will go out in the upcoming week.
  • Will there be a Kindergarten Orientation?

    We are planning a Kindergarten Orientation for students and families the week of August 24. Dates TBA.
  • How will learning support (and counseling) work during this year?

    The Student Support Team will work in consultation with teachers and parents during this unique year.
  • How long is the school day in Remote?

    The remote school day is 3.5 hours of instructional activities that we have standardized in terms of start times. The K-4 day begins at 9:00am and participates in homeroom instructional activities in short intervals with a teacher present. The school day breaks at lunch for 30 minutes and officially ends after a short Enrichment session for K-4 students which is over by 2:00 pm.

    In middle school, the day begins at 8:45 with a Community check-in during advisory in which attendance is recorded. There are ample breaks throughout the day to balance the screen time. The day will end at 3:15 (A/C days) and 3:30 (B days) for the remote world. Instructional time for middle school students remains at approximately 3.5 hours of instructional activities per day with ample time for office hours, small group and 1:1 check ins.
  • Will there be homework during Forward Remote?

    There will be no homework in the Forward Remote portion of the school year.
  • (K-4) Does my child need to attend Enrichment classes after lunch?

    In grades K-2 students have the option of attending the Enrichment class after lunch.
  • (MS) Will the classes be leveled?

    No. All classes (including math) will be taught heterogeneously and teachers will differentiate instruction and use learning tools to assist personalization.
  • How will MJS support the 8th grade student and the high school process?

    We support all 8th grade students and their families each year with special meetings to assist everyone in understanding the high school application process. Typically, these meetings take place at the end of the first month of school. However, because this year is unique, we will be scheduling our orientation for an earlier time closer to the beginning of the school year.
  • Will children from different grade levels have the same breaks in Remote?

    Students in grades K-4 will have a daily morning break from 10-10:30am and lunch at noon.

    Students in middle school will have a daily break from 10:15-10:30. Students will take their lunch from 12:00-12:30. However, please note that there will be ample break time during the day when students are given other breaks between classes or are not in need of Office Hours with their teachers.
  • Will there be any other time for children to socialize with different peers during the school day?

    There will be many opportunities in the remote world for students to be able to connect with other peers and students across grade levels. Examples include: Sixth graders will have the opportunity to read to kindergarten students once a week called K-Pals. We will also have Friday Families once a week for students in grades 1-8. At the grade level, the full class will come together for social-emotional learning and other advisory activities. We are also working on what co-curriculars we can offer during this year.
  • Will there be additional daily sign-ups for students who may need help? (K-4)

    We have designed the schedule so that “office hours” will be offered in the afternoon for students to meet in small groups and /or one on one with their teacher. We will schedule the office hours as we move into the school year.
  • How does PE work in remote learning and do I need to prepare equipment?

    PE lessons will include movement to develop motor skills in grades K-4. A PE kit will be going home with each child in K-4 to help with these skills. The kit will be included in your child’s supplies on the pick-up date.
  • How will parents be successful in managing remote learning?

    Our Technology Education Coordinator and our Dean of Academics hosted self-paced and live parent education sessions to help parents navigate our platform, Schoology. There is a tech support button on the Parent Ed class on Schoology for a direct link to resources and a more direct way to contact tech support. In Lower School, a daily agenda will be posted with pictures to help you and your child manage the school day. Our schedule has certain anchor times where your child will leave the screen for snack and lunch. The times are 10-10:30am and noon for lunch. Communication with your child’s teacher is a priority so that if any needs arise, we can help.
