Head of School Update | February 18, 2021

Dear Mayfield Families,

We hope that you are all having a restful and relaxing Winter Break. We will welcome our Kindergarten-Second Grade students, who chose Forward On Campus for Session 2, back to campus on Monday, February 22. We expect that all students returning to campus will have been maintaining a proper quarantine at home since Winter Break in anticipation of this return. Be sure to complete the SchoolPass survey each day before you come to campus. Please do not come to campus if you are experiencing any symptoms associated with COVID-19, or if you answer “Yes” to any of the questions on the survey.

Coming out of Winter Break, we are following travel quarantine guidelines, which is why we need to wait until the week of March 8 to welcome our Third and Fourth Grade students back to campus. We are pleased to continue hosting COVID-19 testing on campus on a weekly basis, and we encourage all of our students to participate in the testing.

3rd-4th Grade Students Return to Campus March 8 and March 9

The Mayfield Scenario Planning Team has assessed the latest updates from the L.A. County Department of Health. We are excited to announce we plan to welcome our Third and Fourth Grade students, whose families chose Forward On Campus for Session 2, back to campus for in-person instruction beginning on Monday, March 8 for Third Grade and Tuesday, March 9 for Fourth Grade.

There will be one final prayer service for Grades 3-4 on Friday, February 26 - 1:15-2:00 pm.

K-4th Grade Professional Development Day on March 5
There will be no K-4 classes on Friday, March 5 so that our teachers can be properly prepared for the week of March 8 and our campus can be readied for First Reconciliation on March 6 and the wider in-person re-opening of campus.

Middle School (Grades 5-8)

Purple Tier Plan

5th-6th Grade Students Return to Campus for Instruction March 15 and March 16

In order to gradually re-introduce a lot more students for in-person learning on campus, we will aim to bring our Fifth and Sixth Grades back for in-person learning to join our Kindergarten through Fourth Grades beginning March 15 for Grade 5 and March 16 for Grade 6. Under the current city, county, and state guidelines, there is great complexity in offering an in-person middle school schedule including not being able to move our teachers around from class to class. Students will still receive much of their instruction from a remote teacher, but the students will be in person on campus using the current schedule. There is also a need to hire more personnel (of which we are in process) to administer the middle school academic schedule.

Prayer Services between now and then will continue at the rate of once per week as follows:

Tuesday, February 23 (5th Grade)
Tuesday, March 2 (5th Grade)
Wednesday, February 24 (6th Grade)
Wednesday, March 3 (6th Grade)

There will be no prayer services the week of March 8 so teachers can begin moving and setting up classrooms.

7th-8th Grade Students Continue to Participate in Remote Academic Instruction and Afternoon Prayer Services until the County moves to the Red Tier

Mayfield will increase the number of socially-distanced prayer services/PE classes to twice a week for Seventh and Eighth Grade students beginning the week of March 1 and these will continue until the County moves to the Red Tier.

All prayer services will continue to take place in the afternoons with a drop-off time of 1:05-1:15 pm. Students will remain in their original advisory cohorts for these prayer services unless otherwise specified.

Red Tier Plan

7th-8th Grade Students Return to Campus for 50% Hybrid Academic Instruction when the County moves to the Red Tier (no sooner than March 22)

When we are notified by the local health authorities that the County has moved to the Red Tier (after 14 days off the Public Health Monitoring list) we will be able to bring 7th-8th Grade students for in person instruction in a hybrid model (50% students attend classes on campus each day with the other 50% attending virtually from home).  This is consistent with the public health guidelines for students in Grades 7-12.

At this point we will be able to have teachers rotate into classes and do more live instruction with all students in Grades 5-8 using the current schedule.

Information and Declaration of Intent letters will follow from the divisions when we return from winter break.

Thank you as always for your commitment to Mayfield and each other, and we are excited to be moving forward during these complicated times.
