Faculty Spotlight: Innovation and Design Specialist

Innovation is essential for educational institutions like Mayfield Junior School to meet the dynamic and evolving needs of an excellent 21st century school. With the success of our new maker space - the D-Lab, and design-thinking curriculum across grade levels, Mayfield created a new faculty role for the 2017-2018 school year: Innovation and Design Specialist.

Nicole Wirth loves a challenge. As Mayfield Junior School’s new Innovation and Design Specialist, she sees the potential for growth in every challenge she takes on. A former middle school history teacher, Nicole always sought innovative ways to engage her students whether working individually or in collaborative groups. In her new role, facilitating the use of educational technology and managing the D-Lab, she has the opportunity to change the way her fellow teachers think about curriculum and set the bar higher for personalized student learning across subject matter.

In the D-Lab, Nicole oversees the space, tools and materials, and collaborates with teachers as they seek tech-oriented tools and design-thinking ideas for student projects. Staying on top of the latest productivity or educational software and resources is a big part of her job - one Nicole finds both fascinating and fulfilling. “I love exploring new applications and software and then matching need with tool.” She is also determined to guide teachers to plan projects intentionally with a focus on developing the 4Cs (Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, and Communication) within their project goals.

In addition to her roles as teacher mentor and D-Lab manager, Nicole continues to work directly with students as she co-teaches several technology classes including kindergarten and the 7th grade Idea Lab. How students use technology is something Nicole would like to expand. “Technology is prevalent in almost every classroom and subject matter but is often limited to storage or established presentation options. The options for more creative work are available and encouraging computer science such as coding and Robotics or experimenting with different iPad applications could support stronger learning and essential life skills.”

With her first year in this new position only half over, Nicole’s enthusiasm and passion for improving education to meet the pace of technology, has fostered a renewed dynamic on campus. She will continue to build a culture of exploration and experimentation among teachers and students, and in partnership with school leadership, work to develop and implement a strategic vision for the future. Inspired by the possibilities, Nicole is ready for the challenge.
