Classic Story Sheds Light On A More Important Picture
Mayfield's full-scale musical production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" shared the story of a kid who just could not get it right. Charlie Brown felt isolated because of his inability to be an outstanding student, star athlete or friend. Through his rugged determination though, Charlie Brown never gave up on himself and realized success came in the form of caring for and respecting others and finding the good in life.
It is no coincidence Director Lisa Byrne selected "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" for this year's performance.
Each developmental stage at MJS is guided by a theme culminating with 'social justice' in eighth grade. Beginning in kindergarten, Mayfield students are engaged in an academic and faith-filled program designed to support and help students grow as effective communicators, analytical thinkers and empathetic community members.
This year, eighth graders connected with students around the world through the 'Out of Eden' initiative, coordinated a Harvest Festival to raise funds for a service learning program, and lent helping hands and ears to students in Rockport, Texas affected by a hurricane. Mayfield students are learning to take care of one another both on stage and off to help raise-up those who feel marginalized.
Service and giving are part of the school's Catholic Holy Child fabric and are essential to Mayfield's identity as expressions of faith in action. These interdisciplinary experiences are designed to give students both a voice and choice, build community partnerships and draw tangible connections throughout the academic curriculum.
In musicals like "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," Mayfield students are challenged to explore the depths of story lines, relate them to real-world problems and opportunities, then gain skills and information to develop a solution.
