Summer Reading Offers Student Voice and Choice

Tatiana Guyer, Librarian
“When in doubt, go to the library.” What a famous and fantastic quote from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. Another favorite quote of mine is from Lemony Snicket’s Horseradish, “A good library will never be too neat, or too dusty, because somebody will always be in it, taking books of shelves and staying up late reading them.”

Hodgins Library is filled to the brim with books for every student on campus, tailored to their literature tastes, as well as catering to their adventurous reading palates. We trek towards the new school year with a new theme: Reading Is Magic! Most folks know about Harry Potter, from being rabid fans of the series to becoming curious about these amazing stories. We are so excited to bring all the reading magic to students through curated titles; the latest books; amazing author visits; Book Fair; Book Club; Recycle & Read, and Summer Reading.

Summer Reading at Mayfield is three magical months of diving into literature of all sorts: physical books, ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts, websites, databases, etc. The leisurely pace of warm days, sunny skies, and a relaxed time frame lends itself to reading for fun, yearning to stretch those savory book moments, and taking delight in a favorite series, author, or genre. Hodgins Library provides an extensive list of recommended books per grade, providing a springboard into choosing a good book. But Summer Reading is so much more than that. It is a personal choice, an individual blueprint for one’s own reading pleasure.

Last year, over 350 students actively participated in Summer Reading, with more than 200,000 minutes of literature activities logged. Every student enjoys the opportunity to forge their own reading road, choosing what works for them, and including family and friends on their literary journey. This summer, we welcome each and every one of you to discover that Reading Is Magic!

Visit our Summer Reading website for a curated list of books for each grade level.
