A Christmas Tradition

The year of the Christmas elf is legendary. What was started over 30 years ago as a fun sculpture project for sixth graders to gain experience with balance, proportion and design, is now a middle school rite of passage, and a shared experience for hundreds of Mayfield graduates.

Not only do students look forward to making them but parents save them as keepsakes for use year after year as part of their holiday home décor. We wondered…have the years been good to these treasured art projects? Turns out many were in need of a few minor repairs so we started a new tradition: The Parents of Alumni Elf Workshop. Art teacher Penny Wong opened her classroom to parents of alumni for a little elf triage. Various generations of elves arrived with broken limbs, missing pieces and some chipped paint. While the elves underwent repair, everyone enjoyed the company and festive spirit – catching up and sharing elf stories.
