Celebrating the Class of 2019

An overflowing crowd gathered on June 7 to celebrate the Class of 2019. Graduation at MJS has all the traditional elements – awards, heartfelt speeches, laughter and more than a few tears but the ceremony for this unique class, as many before them, was made meaningful in their enthusiasm to soak in all MJS had provided, take a deep breath and continue the journey.

The day was somewhat bittersweet as retiring Headmaster Joseph J. Gill delivered his final graduation address. His words remained focused on the 62 graduates before him emphasizing the potential within the next stage of their lives, “Now it is time for you to take what we have given you. Time to turn what you have learned into action and taking the next step toward your personal independence. Time to show us, and more importantly yourself, how wonderful your days ahead will be.”

Alumni speaker, Bridget Garrity ’13 echoed this sentiment encouraging them to be confident but curious, “You all have special skills that have gotten you to this point today. But your true gifts may lie in areas that you have not yet explored, boundaries you have yet to cross. As you take this next step, trust your instincts, listen to that small voice inside your head and become the best version of yourself.”

We are very proud of all this Class accomplished in their final year at MJS. The eighth grade year is full of leadership opportunities, extended responsibilities and valuable experiences. The class embraced a yearlong commitment to working with the children at Good Shepherd Shelter, organized successful fundraising events and shared their many talents in the eighth-grade play, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.”

A Mayfield Junior School education comes full circle when the time comes to send our eighth graders off to high school and out into the world. Each graduating class is unique and we look forward to their success. Please join us in congratulating the Mayfield Junior School Class of 2019.
