Dear Mayfield Community,

As a follow-up to yesterday’s communication, please review this official notification. Saturday afternoon we were informed that a Mayfield Eighth-Grade community member tested positive for COVID-19. This individual was not on campus on Friday.

How We Are Responding

Mayfield immediately initiated our exposure management plan, following established protocols defined by public health agencies in response to a confirmed COVID-19 case. All affected campus spaces were deep cleaned. We have informed the Pasadena Public Health Department, launched a review, and initiated contact tracing.

Per CDC guidelines, our community member is self-isolating at home. We notified our Eighth-Grade students and shifted unvaccinated students to remote instruction. We informed the Mayfield community of the positive test.

Siblings of these Eighth-Graders can continue to come to school, as only those who have been in close contact to the positive case must quarantine.

Regarding quarantine after exposure, the City of Pasadena has recently changed its requirements for students. Students who have been exposed to a positive case can end their quarantine after seven days if they receive a negative PCR test result for a test taken on or after day five from the date of last exposure. The return date for unvaccinated students in Eighth-Grade is November 5 for those who get a negative PCR test and November 8 for those who opt not to test.

How You Can Help

Be proactive about reducing the number of interactions that students have with one another by practicing physical distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19. In addition to physical distancing, other important tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include:
  • Stay home when you are sick. Anyone with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should remain at home until the symptoms have subsided or they get a negative PCR test result. If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, the optimal time to be tested is 5 days after exposure.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol.
  • All students MUST wear a mask while indoors on campus.
  • Limit close contact with people who are sick, and avoid sharing supplies, food, drinks, or utensils.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
  • Filling out your SchoolPass daily health screening of students for COVID-19, including a temperature check before coming to school.

Public Health Actions

All confirmed cases should self-isolate for at least 10 days and close contacts must quarantine for 10 days from the last exposure in order to prevent illness in new persons. If you are an Eighth-Grade family, you may receive a call from the Pasadena Public Health Department as your child is considered a close contact. A close contact is someone in the same cohort, or someone who has been within six feet of an infected person (laboratory-confirmed) for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.

Please note that all information, including the name(s) of ill persons, shared regarding any public health investigation is confidential to protect patient privacy.
