Mathematics
Students learn a variety of strategies to build on four critical areas: developing understanding of addition, subtraction, whole number relationships, place value, linear measurement, and reasoning about attributes of geometric shapes.
Learning activities are interactive and hands-on with digital elements included for deeper understanding. Students engage with problem-based interactive learning and visual learning to increase conceptual understanding. Students will develop an understanding of addition and subtraction and develop strategies for addition and subtraction through 20. They will also develop an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. They will develop an understanding of linear measurement and reason with geometric shapes and their attributes. The major objective is to provide the individual student with creative and engaging opportunities to expand his or her mathematical knowledge. Technology is an integral part of the elementary program and is used to reinforce numerous mathematical concepts. Students leave first grade with an increased ability to apply mathematics to practical situations.
