Library

First graders build on the library skills and concepts they learned in Kindergarten. They alphabetize to the first letter to locate books in the library. Students can identify parts of a book, in both print and digital formats, and compare and contrast the differences. They can identify the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction and can describe the roles of authors and illustrators and their contribution to print and digital materials. Students understand how to check out and care for a variety of library resources, both print and digital. They respond to questions (e.g., those that ask who, what, when where, and how). Students relate prior knowledge to information and are able to identify meaning from more complex symbols and pictures in print and digital materials. They learn to share information orally and creatively with other students and audiences. Through guided reading and reading on their own, students experience a wide representation of grade level appropriate text, including classic and contemporary literature, periodicals, digital and online information, and informational text. The library reinforces and builds upon computer skills learned in technology class. Students access online library material such as educational databases, library catalog, and literature websites, as well as conduct basic research for class, adhering to the acceptable use policy.
