Mayfield Voices

The Mayfield Community is a rich and diverse group of individuals with unique perspectives, varied passions and interests, and deep beliefs.
Meet our new Head of School Joe Sciuto.

With close to two decades in faith-based and independent education, Joe comes to Mayfield as an experienced and passionate administrator and innovator. Before joining the Mayfield community, Joe served eight years as Head of School at Providence High School in Burbank, a Catholic college preparatory and coeducational school guided by the mission and philosophy of the Sisters of Providence.

What first drew you to education as a career?
I have a younger brother, Jim, who is 13 years younger than me (I have two older sisters as well). Jim was a "change of life baby" for my parents. As a teenage and young adult, I carted Jim around, and of course coached many of his sports teams -baseball, soccer, football, and basketball. In college, I picked up an afternoon/evening job coaching the high school JV basketball team at Harvard School (now Harvard-Westlake School). The varsity coach, Greg Hilliard, is an amazing man and educator, and he became a real mentor of mine. I knew that I wanted to work with young people, and since I was an English major in college, teaching and coaching was an easy choice. 30 years later working in schools, I can't imagine doing anything else!

With school starting in a few weeks, what are you looking forward to the most?
I'm most looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of the MJS students. I'm excited to work with such a talented faculty and staff, and I want to enhance the engagement of our parent and guardian community as well.

Where did you grow up?
My wife Marcie and I were both born and raised in Southern California. I stayed local for college as well- earning my bachelor’s at Cal State, Northridge and master’s from Pepperdine University.

What do you like most about living in Los Angeles?
The diversity – in every sense.

What are some favorite hobbies and activities?
Marcie and I love to spend time outdoors. We go hiking often and I enjoy ocean kayaking. We both enjoy live music as well. I am also a big sports fan with season tickets to L.A. Rams football, LAFC soccer and Matador (CSUN) Basketball. And of course, I love the L.A. Dodgers and L.A. Clippers (yes, I'm a Clippers fan, not a Lakers fan!).

Favorite food?
I have been a pescatarian for 30 years now, but my favorite food is Pizza- especially Pizzeria Mozza – so I can’t say my diet is super healthy. I also love sushi and Mexican food.

Any favorite movies?
Field of Dreams. Plus, I always have to see anything from Disney-Pixar. I really loved Toy Story 4 this summer!

Do you like to travel?
We go to New Orleans so often it is like a second home. We had the opportunity to visit my roots in Southern Italy – Puglia and Sicily – which was great. Dream trip right now is Japan.

Favorite writer?
Favorite of all time: Henry David Thoreau. I studied transcendentalism in college and his life’s work had a big impact on me. Mark Twain is also a favorite, and the contemporary author I most enjoy is T. C. Boyle.

If you could meet three people from history, who would they be?
Mark Twain, Susan B. Anthony, and Muhammad Ali

Is there a quote or saying you find meaningful?
"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." - John Wooden
