At Mayfield Junior School, the eighth grade is a year of opportunity, responsibility and growth. As the final year in their Mayfield journey and perhaps the most anticipated, students share big expectations with a little apprehension and enthusiasm to make the most of every moment. From organizing major school events such as the Harvest Festival to becoming role models as Student Council officers and heads of School Families and navigating the secondary school application process, there is much to accomplish. Given the opportunity to meet the challenges of the year as individuals and as a group, the class develops strong bonds, and each member grows in confidence.
This series of posts will focus on elements within this important year of the Mayfield experience.
Leadership: Student Council
From election speeches to graduation, Student Council provides valuable opportunities in public speaking, leadership, responsibility and collaborative decision-making. Representing the entire student body, student council officers support the school as a whole by connecting with the greater community, promoting fundraising events and acting as a liaison with the Headmaster and administration. Mayfield’s student council is made up of class representatives for grades 5-8, with eighth grade officers in the roles of Commissioners of Public Relations, Commissioners of Religion and School Spirit, Commissioners of Technology, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and President. Each officer has more than one responsibility throughout the year. The Commissioners of Public Relations promote all events and activities and produce the annual Talent Show, and the Commissioners of Religion and School Spirit organize the MJS School Families program and assist as needed with Masses and other special events. Commissioners of Technology focus mainly on providing technical support for student events, Morning Prayer and school masses. The Treasurer manages fundraising and directs snack bar sales, and the Secretary records student council meetings and presents a “quote of the day” to the school community at Morning Prayer. The Vice-President runs all elections and, as second in command, supports the President in all of his or her official duties standing in when necessary. The Student Body President as elected represents the entire student body to both the Mayfield community and other area schools. The President calls Morning Prayer to order, runs weekly student council meetings, meets with the Headmaster monthly to discuss student affairs and as the school year comes to a close, the President is called upon to speak at graduation.
The council officers are a true team, engaging in open discussion, and sharing ideas and collaborating on every project. The experience provides training in time management, problem solving and people skills and also develops individual leadership styles with the support of Pam Danni, Student Activities Director and Juan Garcia, Council Advisor.
