Perspective: A Shared Spirit
Chris Goethals
At Mayfield, we are blessed to be a part of an international community of schools, teachers and students. This affinity strengthens and validates our Mission. As a network school, here in the U.S., we share the Goals of the Schools of the Holy Child Jesus and are challenged to continually engage not only our students’ minds but their hearts as well. These shared goals are evident when you meet someone from another Holy Child school- whether teacher, student, alum or parent, there is an instant connection and a unique spirit drawn from our educational tradition.
I recently had the honor of visiting two Holy Child Schools on the East Coast: Cornelia Connelly Center in New York City and School of the Holy Child in Rye, New York. Though the schools are distinctly different from one another—the Connelly Center is a small, inner-city school, while Rye sits on a sprawling campus covered with foliage and grand buildings--they both felt familiar. What do our three schools have in common?
The first thing I noticed was the warm welcome I received from students, faculty and staff. The representatives I met took great pride in their schools and were eager to show me around and describe what they love about their schools. I saw quotes from Cornelia Connelly on the walls, as well as student artwork scattered beautifully throughout buildings. I heard music, laughter and enthusiastic discussions bouncing through the halls.
The Holy Child Network of Schools links us together as a community that believes in opportunities for all, celebrating the individual, and the boundless power of education. Creativity and deeper thinking are emphasized at every grade level and trust is placed in each person. Students take pride in the heritage and history of their communities, and all three campuses have a transformational spirit. Each, in its own way, feels like home.
