4th Grade Premieres New California History Play
The fourth grade premiered “California Missions… and More!” to family and friends on Wednesday, May 7. The play, which highlights the 4th grade social studies curriculum, is set in 1920s Hollywood and takes the audience to the soundstage of a blockbuster movie in the making. A cast of characters including movie director JB, faihful assistant Johnson, ranchero wives, President Polk, Mary Pickford and many more, bring the history of California to life, from the fate of the Native American tribes and the building of the missions through the gold rush and western expansion, and finally statehood. Of course it wouldn’t be a blockbuster in the making (or a Mayfield play) without a little singing, dancing, humor and talented musicians thrown in and this fourth grade class handled it all like pros.
The play was a new updated version of the traditional California History play, adapted from an original play by Ron Fink and John Heath and expanded by MJS teachers David Hemak and Lisa Byrne.
