A Focus on the Arts

In Mayfield’s arts program, so much learning and growth come from experience. Students explore the feel and range of different mediums in visual arts, cultivate creativity and self-expression in music composition, dramatic arts, and choir, and learn technical skills alongside performance acumen in theatrical plays and concerts. In academic classes, arts integration provides connection and more profound understanding through the study of art and music in different cultures in history or observational nature journaling in science.

Each year, we celebrate the arts in May, and the scope of the program shines in the highlight of student creativity and skill. With continuing COVID safety restrictions this year, we once again presented the visual arts in a Virtual Art Show and the Spring Concert as a Zoom-recorded video. Yet it was still possible to witness the arts and arts integration in action. Eighth graders presented a live and pre-recorded musical on the field, kindergarteners danced to Mozart in the courtyard, third graders turned book reports into shoebox theater with cyclorama effects, fifth graders took over the Chapel floor as they finished various art projects, and seventh graders played tubano drums on the field as part of a history class deep dive into West African culture.

These experiences and more offer a foundation for self-discovery and build upon each student’s unique potential in an environment of encouragement and possibility.
