A Focus on the Arts

In many ways, we celebrate the arts every day at MJS. Music, drama, and studio arts are an integral part of Holy Child education and opportunities abound for students to explore and discover skills and talents. So much learning and growth comes from experience. In Mayfield’s arts program students participate in collaboration and performance, consider style, theme and tone in the study of fine art, and build upon their unique potential in an environment of encouragement and possibility.

The scope of the program really shines in the month of May. As the school year comes to a close, achievement and hard work are showcased in traditional plays, curated shows and concerts. The first-grade class kicked off the month with their spring musical, Friendly Neighborhood Helpers. The play is a creative and fun presentation highlighting the many people from grocers to firefighters who make up a community. All year the class has been learning about being good neighbors as part of their integrated service-learning curriculum.

Later in the month, the kindergarten class presented a joyful performance of the Noah’s Ark Play for incoming kindergarteners and their families. Dancing unicorns, animals of all shapes and sizes and a lovely rainbow after the storm delighted parents and guests. This traditional play is a rite of passage for the kindergarteners as they complete their first year and a wonderful opportunity to extend a warm welcome to the new students.

The annual Student Art Show opened on May 21 transforming the Greg Smith Memorial Gymnasium into a colorful gallery featuring student artwork from all grade levels. Displays extended from wall to wall featuring creative ceramics, landscape paintings, masks, paper mâche sculptures and more. From the traditional to the highly imaginative every piece truly showcases the creative expression encouraged daily and the hard work and talent of each student.

The Middle School Spring Concert closed the month-long celebration in grand style. With a focus on student voice and choice – a collective passion for music rocked the house. Vocal and instrumental performances by the sixth grade, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Rock Band, the Mayfield Junior Symphony Orchestra and Ukulele Ensemble highlighted the strength of the music program and student hard work and talent.
