Family, fun, and friendly competition that’s what the Shea family wanted to celebrate when they established the Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament 37 years ago. With their generous support, Mayfield Junior School has faithfully continued the annual event, which has become a beloved tradition among current and alumni families alike.
The sun was shining, and spirits were high as 14 teams took to the courts on April 6 for the 37th Annual Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament at the Flint Canyon Tennis Club. The student bracket, open to grades 5 through 8, welcomed many first-time players who exchanged friendly jabs and set the stage for a spirited competition.
After several rounds of play, reigning champions Smith Sanderson ’26 with dad Spencer were paired against Tony Nakayama ’26 and Louis Tanaka ’24 for the student finals, which took place that evening at the Shea Home before dinner on the lawn. Ultimately, Nakayama and Tanaka defeated the Sandersons to win the 2025 title.
In the Donna Martin Alumni Division, Mayfield grads Bryan Lynch ’98, with partner Hayley Hoffman English ’05, faced father-son team Britt McConnell and Shea McConnell ’09 in the final match. Both teams scored impressive points, and the McConnells took home the win as 2025 alumni champions.
This year’s event was particularly special as we recognized and remembered Donna Martin P’76, ’77, ’79, ’82, GP’96 for her many contributions to Mayfield and its tennis program. “At Mayfield, in addition to running the Supply Store, Donna started the tennis team in 1974,” her son Dennis shared with the crowd of 75 people gathered for dinner after the student finals match had concluded. “She was absolutely thrilled when the alumni division of the tournament was named in her honor. Behind that smile and laugh of hers was a truly competitive person. She loved this tournament so much, but she really loved Mayfield.”
